We mostly offer this program onlineYou’ll need a laptop, computer, or tablet with a stable internet connection. It’s also important to have a private space where you won’t be interrupted by children or other adults for the duration of the session.

This program takes place over six two hour sessions which are generally held at the same time each week.

This course is open to parents and caregivers of children aged 10-18 years seeking to improve their relationship with, and understanding of, their teen. We recommend that parents or caregivers have some contact with their children (including supervised contact) to practice skills.

These groups are not designed for individual problem-solving or advice about specific situations.

Instead, they are psychoeducation groups which means:

  • You’ll learn practical, evidence-based skills
  • You’ll hear from other parents and care givers and share experiences
  • You’ll build strategies you can apply to your own family

Many parents and caregivers find that learning these skills helps them feel more confident in handling challenges.

Yes, sessions are interactive and supportive. We don’t just “talk at you” — we learn together in a range of ways, such as:

  • Short videos to introduce key ideas
  • Group discussions with other caregivers
  • Practical activities to try out new skills
  • Role plays to practice conversations in a safe, supportive space

You’re always welcome to participate at your own comfort level.

Parents and caregivers have a powerful influence on how children and teens learn to manage emotions. Even small changes in how parents and caregivers respond can make a big difference over time.

There are a number of factors we consider when deciding upon group size and this will vary across our programs. While these numbers may vary for different groups, there won’t be more than 15 adult participants in any of our groups.

All information about becoming a client, including consent and privacy details, are available here: Client Information page.

You now need to complete the registration form, which will be emailed to you, and read through the Client Information page. Your place in the group cannot be confirmed until the form is completed, and you have had a confirmation call with a Family Life staff member.

Feel free to call (03) 8599 5433 during business hours to discuss any further questions you have about the groupwork program.
