What is adolescent violence?
How do I know if my child is engaging in violent behaviour?
There are a number of warning signs that your child is using abusive or violent behaviour including physical, emotional and financial abuse.
Physical abuse can include hitting, punching, shoving, kicking, spitting, breaking and throwing things, bullying behaviour toward siblings, and cruelty to pets.
Emotional abuse can include verbal abuse, swearing, yelling, put downs, playing minds games and making threats to run away, hurt or kill themselves.
Financial abuse can include demanding money or purchases you can’t afford, stealing money of possessions, and incurring debts that you have to pay.
What support does Family Life offer for adolescent violence?
We have several services and programs that that may be able to assist if you are experiencing adolescent violence in the home. To start, please contact The Orange Door to refer you to the most appropriate service.
What should I do if I feel unsafe in my home due to my child’s behaviour?
Family Life is not a crisis service. If you need emergency assistance or feel at immediate risk of harm to yourself or others, please contact emergency services on 000. For other crisis support visit our Contact Us page.
What role do parent/s play in the support of their child when experiencing adolescent violence?
Parents play an essential role by supporting their child, participating in counseling sessions when appropriate, implementing strategies at home, and fostering a positive environment. We work closely with families to ensure everyone feels supported.
