Talk4Change: Evaluation and Key Findings

Family Life’s Talk4Change  pilot is generating valuable insights for practitioners working with adults who use family violence, particularly those with complex needs.

As shared at Family and Relationships Services Australia (FRSA) Conference 2026, Evidence in Action: Key Findings from Talk4Change and their Implications for Practice led by Tony Johannsen (Director Clinical Practice, Evidence & Quality), the pilot showcases how evidence-informed, holistic approaches are supporting meaningful behaviour change.

An independent evaluation by Swinburne University found Talk4Change to be a credible alternative to traditional behaviour change programs. Its blended model, 10 individual sessions alongside 10 group sessions with the same facilitators, builds trust and enables deeper, more personalised work while strengthening shared learning.

A key strength is Talk4Change’s person-centred, trauma-capable approach. Participants described feeling safe, supported, and able to engage meaningfully:

“Talk4Change takes away all the stigma and helps you work out why [things] have exploded and gives you practical skills to handle emotions in a heightened state.” – Participant

Strong therapeutic relationships supported both accountability and motivation, critical for sustained engagement and risk reduction.

The program also builds confidence and practical skills to support long-term change:

“It’s highlighted the important things I need to do… it’s such a positive… what I need to continue on this pathway.” – Participant

Encouragingly, changes were also observed by victim survivors:

“He’s more aware… he’s able to actually say, this is how I’m feeling… I’m kind of not okay.” – Victim Survivor

These findings reinforce the value of flexible, relationship-based approaches that respond to complexity while maintaining a strong focus on accountability and safety.
