Practice in Action 2026

Practice in Action 2026

More than ever, addressing family violence requires collaboration, shared learning and a commitment to continuous improvement. These principles were at the heart of Practice in Action 2026, a forum proudly presented by Family Life and Relationship Matters, bringing together practitioners from across the sector to explore effective responses to men who use violence and coercive control.

The forum created a valuable space for professionals to exchange knowledge, challenge assumptions and engage with the complexity of behaviour change practice. Throughout the day, a number of key themes emerged, highlighting both the challenges and opportunities involved in creating safer futures for women, children and families.

Discussions reinforced that meaningful change is rarely linear or immediate. Practitioners explored the importance of taking a long-term view of behaviour change, recognising that programs and interventions are just one part of a broader, coordinated response. Participants also reflected on the critical role that victim-survivors play in informing understanding of safety, accountability and lasting change.

A consistent message throughout the forum was that no single practitioner, program or organisation can address family violence alone. Progress relies on strong partnerships, shared responsibility and collaboration across services and sectors.

The forum also acknowledged the extraordinary skill, dedication and persistence of practitioners working in this complex field. Every day, professionals across the sector support individuals and families while navigating challenging circumstances and significant responsibilities. Their work continues to make a profound difference in the lives of women, children, families and communities.

As the conversations from Practice in Action continue, the challenge and opportunity for the sector is to build on this shared learning, strengthen partnerships and keep asking what effective practice looks like for those who use violence and coercive control.

Because women and children deserve safety. Because meaningful change requires collective effort. And because creating safer, stronger communities is a responsibility we all share.
