What We Heard: Karingal’s Story of Strength, Pressure and Possibility

More than 180 local voices have helped tell Karingal’s story prior to the neighbourhood summit being held on June 23 and it’s one of strong foundations, evolving pressures and real opportunity.

A community that feels like home

Karingal stands out for its sense of connection. Stakeholders consistently describe a “closeknit”, downtoearth community where neighbours know each other and families feel supported. Local places like Karingal Hub, Ballam Park and Karingal Place are more than amenities—they’re the heartbeat of the community.

Add to this, good schools, accessible services and convenient local infrastructure, and it’s clear why families choose to live, and stay, in Karingal. There’s a strong base to build from.

But pressure is rising

Behind these strengths, many residents are feeling the strain. Cost of living pressures are hitting hard, with housing stress, food insecurity and tough financial choices becoming more common.

Mental health challenges are increasing across all age groups, often made worse by long wait times and barriers to early support. Safety concerns such as youth crime and anti-social behaviour are also shaping how safe people feel in their own neighbourhoods.

Social isolation is another growing issue, particularly for older people, new residents and vulnerable families. And even where services exist, they’re not always easy to find or navigate if you’re not connected in with the local community.

A community ready to act

The message from the stakeholders consulted isn’t just about challenges. It is also about solutions.

There’s strong support for more free and low-cost activities that bring people together like outdoor events, playgroups and parenting programs.

Young people are front of mind. Stakeholders repeatedly called for dedicated youth spaces, and more engaging activities for them to participate in. The opportunity is clear; invest in young people, and you strengthen the whole community.

Building Karingal’s identity

Looking ahead, stakeholders see the chance to strengthen Karingal’s identity. From upgraded parks and improved transport to community gardens, markets and local storytelling, there’s a desire to create a stronger sense of place – a proud, visible “Karingal”.

This isn’t just feedback. It’s the beginning of a roadmap, shaped by lived experience and local insight, pointing towards a more connected, supported and thriving Karingal.

We look forward to seeing you at the Karingal Neighbourhood Summit on June 23 to continue this conversation.  Feel free to contact Family Life for more information [email protected]
