Bayside Citizens of the Year 2010
Three of our founding volunteers are Bayside Citizen of the Year
Late last year we nominated three of our founding volunteers from our Opportunity Shop at 355c Bluff Road in Hampton for the Rotary Club of of Beaumaris and Bendigo Community Bank Beaumaris 3193 Citizen of the Year Award.
The volunteers nominated were Pamela Allison (sister-in-law of Family Life's first President), Judy Haworth (there is a tradition of volunteering in Judy's family with her mother and daughter having worked at our Opportunity Shop as well) and Carmel Sanders.
Not only were they awarded the Beaumaris Citizen of the Year, they were then nominated for the Bayside Citizen of the Year award and won that too!
The volunteers were recognised for their extraordinary service to the community over the past 39 years, as members of the team at our Opportunity Shop in Hampton.

Impact of their work includes:
- Raising of $1,600,000+ for Family Life - discretionary income which has been used to underwrite innovative services including a Youth Bullying Program and Family Support Visiting Programs for isolated families. Now it is helping our Creating Capable Communities program in the public housing estate in Highett;
- Enabling hundreds of low-income families to access low-cost goods and to enjoy the social experience of shopping;
- Enhancing social support networks and companionship for the several hundred volunteers who have worked in the shop over the 39 years;
- Saving tens of tonnes of goods from being dumped in landfill.
