A focus on the most vulnerable

The mission of the Agency, together with growing community needs and changes to government policies and funding, has guided the work of the Agency since 1995 to increasingly focus on issues of violence, child abuse, mental illness, substance abuse, suicide and homelessness.

All requests for services are discussed with a professional counsellor, with priority given to situations where family members may be at risk or where families are on low incomes. Service response occurs within two days for priority at-risk situations, and within two weeks for all other eligible referrals.

Government and a range of community partners have joined with the Agency to sponsor service growth for responding in a timely and effective way to requests for assistance.

Close relationships are maintained with the community for an in-depth knowledge of needs, networks, and participation in the work of the Agency. Program and practice innovation is guided by expressed needs and the feedback from service users and colleagues.

The knowledge gained from practice is directed back into service development, shared with the community via education and prevention strategies, and disseminated to the field via professional networks, conference presentations, training, and consultation services. This is formalised in the mission statement, business model and strategic planning.
