Family Life SHINE Success for 2008 to 2010

 

What Family Life SHINE Delivered

 

Over 1,070 people living in Southern Metropolitan Melbourne participated in the Family Life SHINE Project.

 

Additionally thousands more were reached through community education and awareness activities.

 

From May 2008 to June 2010 the Family Life SHINE Project:

 

  • Provided specialist case management support for 220 children and their families
  • Taught resilience and self-confidence skills to over 1,100 children across 16 primary and secondary schools through targeted group programs (many of whom come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds)
  • Trained 45 teachers to deliver the 'FRIENDS for Life' program - a school-based anxiety prevention program that helps children and teenagers cope with feelings of fear, worry and depression by building resilience and self-esteem and teaching cognitive and emotional skills
  • Ran cyber-bullying education sessions that reached over 470 students and 150 parents

 

The SHINE Project also:

 

  • Provided specialist groups for boys displaying aggression and violence
  • Provided specialist groups for children who had experienced violence prior to moving to a women's refuge
  • Ran programs and support for children whose parents have a mental illness
  • Provided a specialist group for girls displaying self-harming behaviour
  • Provided education and information activities to promote mental health awareness through mental health forums and exhibitions, community festivals, and parent information evenings
  • Provided linkages for indigenous communities to access mental health support services

Family Life SHINE Results

 

  • 98% of parents and children were satisfied with the Family Life SHINE Project
  • 96% of parents and children reported a positive impact from participating in the Family Life SHINE Project
  • 87% of parents and children reported an increase in knowledge about mental health
  • 99% of parents and children reported increased knowledge of effective communication skills
  • 99% of parents and children reported an increase in knowledge of effective coping skills following participation in the Family Life SHINE Project
