Open Garden Day 2010

Beautiful Gardens of Brighton

Sunday 24 October 2010

With the sun shinning and six beautiful gardens open in Brighton, this event provided a great day for many who attended, and raised important funds for Family Life. This event is only possible thanks to the dedication of the hardworking volunteer committee who organise it, and the hosts who generously open their garden for the day.

A variety of gardens were featured from Brighton's "Golden Mile", providing ideas and inspiration for all garden enthusiasts.

The day featured demonstrations and information from sponsors, including Victorian Lawn Installations, Citywide Service Solutions, CopperRock and Bayside City Council's "Be a Bayside Water Saver".

There was a BBQ and Devonshire Tea available as guests wandered the gardens, and wonderful entertainment was provided by local musicians and school students.

Guests also had the chance to ride between the gardens in style with our courtesy vintage cars!

The gardens featured were:

1 Wellington Street "Chilton" is a beautiful 1853 house with a garden designed to reflect its original splendour. With a backdrop of cypresses and lilly pillies, there are plantings of roses and other ornamentals. The exquisite garden is cared for by the owners who have extensively renovated and re-established the garden while still providing room for their children to play.

27 Victoria Street is a modern house with a lovely Japanese-inspired garden providing a great example of what can be done in a smaller space. The garden reflects the owners' lengthy stay in Japan, featuring Japanese Maples, Helleborus and many bulbs.

26 Grosvenor Street is a grand Victorian house with a beautiful back garden featuring a flowing fountain and a delightful playhouse for the grandchildren. The garden, like many others, suffered from the drought so the owners have replanted extensively with natives, which are all thriving.

285 New Street is a Victorian house with a rambling garden and treasure-trove of beautiful sculptures and art works created by the owners. It is an established garden which, while suffering from the lack of rain in recent years, has been replanted in some areas by carefully chosen natives to complement the existing plants.

19 Seacombe Grove is a large rolling garden with great entertaining areas and fun for the children, including a playground, in-ground trampolines, swimming pool and tennis court. Being a new garden of less than a year, it's modern and minimalistic design gives great ideas, topped off by beautiful views over the beach and to the Brighton Yacht Club.

2A Seacombe Grove is a contemporary bluestone house which shows great use of smaller space to create a beautiful entertaining area. Trimmed with modern black and white furnishings, it features a lush green oasis of cypress and palms, and includes a pool and play area for the children. The garden is watered by a 40,000 litre tank.

Thank you to all our community sponsors who make this fundraising event possible.
